NY State Septic System Replacement Program (SSRP) for Suffolk Homeowners
Last reviewed October 17, 2026 · Official sources linked throughout
New York's State Septic System Replacement Fund Program (SSRP) helps homeowners in participating counties, including Suffolk, replace cesspools and failing septic systems. In Suffolk it's administered by the county alongside the Septic Improvement Program, so one county application covers both. [source]
How much
- Enhanced systems (designed to reduce total nitrogen to 19 mg/L or less, like Suffolk's I/A systems): up to 75% of eligible costs, max $25,000 per property.
- Conventional septic projects: up to 50% of eligible costs, max $10,000 per property.
Who's eligible
- Single or two-family residences and small businesses with design flow up to 1,000 gallons per day. [state outline]
- Seasonal or secondary homes may be eligible if the county determines the existing system has the reasonable potential to adversely impact a priority waterbody. [state outline]
- New construction isn't eligible, and connecting to a public sewer isn't an eligible project. [state outline]
- The fund targets Priority Geographic Areas. On Long Island these are the priority areas identified in the Suffolk County (and Nassau) Nine Element Plans. [DEC]
How it's paid
In Suffolk, state grant funds can go directly to an approved installer or be reimbursed to the owner, after installation is complete. [source]
How to apply
Apply through Suffolk County's portal. DEC tells homeowners to contact their county, which determines eligibility. [DEC] Step-by-step application guide.
